Now for our monthy dose of literature-
As mentioned in the last issue, we shall now begin a new series on the 10 most successful fiction authors of the last decade. The authors we intend to cover in the coming few issues are:
  • Stephen King
  • John Grisham
  • J K Rowling
  • J R R Tolkien
  • James Patterson
  • Dan Brown
  • James Herbert
  • Stephenie Meyer
  • Stieg Larsson
  • Nicholas Sparks
Of course Tolkien and Larsson have both passed away some time back, nevertheless, their works have often featured in best seller lists in the past decade. It is definitely worth its while to acquaint ourselves with the masterpieces of these super successful writers. In this issue let's talk about Nicholas Sparks.

Nicholas Sparks

Nicholas-SparksThis romantic fiction writer was born with no silver spoon. In fact he made it big only after trying a hand at many paltry jobs including waiting tables, selling pharmaceuticals and real estate appraisal. His first best seller was The Notebook, published in 1996. Since then the author has gone on to write 17 novels of which 6 have already been adapted into film. The 6 novels that have been adapted into film are Message in a Bottle (1999), A Walk to Remember (2002), The Notebook (2004), Nights in Rodanthe (2008), Dear John (2010), and The Last Song (2010). Two more of his novels are expected to be released as films soon. True Believer is expected to be released in 2011 and The Lucky One in 2012.

As mentioned earlier, all his works are romantic pieces of fiction. They have not received much critical acclaim but the masses have loved his stories. Sparks' books have been translated in multiple languages and have featured in best seller lists for several weeks at a time. Sparks does draw on real life experiences for some of his plots.
