In this issue I shall share some interesting anecdotes on Stieg Larsson and his super successful Millenium Series of crime fiction.
This Swedish born fiction writer became world famous only after his death, when 3 of his novels were posthumously published. These novels were The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, and they were published in 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively. Together these three novels have been called The Millennium Series.
The main characters of The Millennium Series are Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. Lisbeth is a geeky young woman with limited social skills and Mikael is an investigative journalist. It is said that the character of Mikael has been based on Larsson's own experiences as a journalist. Lisbeth too is Larsson's literary representation of a real-life gang-rape victim whose assault he had unfortunately witnessed.
Interestingly, Stieg's (a journalist by profession) initial writing efforts were not in crime fiction but in science fiction. He wrote The Millennium Series only as a hobby, not intending to publish it until just before his untimely death.
Book Review Circle gossip
Larsson died of a heart attack at the age of 50 in Stockholm, Sweden on the 4th of November,2004. Before his death Larsson had been living with his long-time lover Eva Gabrielsson. It seems Larsson never married Eva because he preferred to keep their residential address a secret. In Sweden, married couples are required to make their addresses publicly available. Larsson feared that revealing his address would be a threat to his security( he had faced various death threats in his lifetime from extremist groups due to his political affiliations). Unfortunately, due to this decision, on Larsson's sudden death, all his property went to his father and brother, with whom he had little contact, instead of going to his lover and long time companion Eva. This event sparked a much-publicized dispute between Eva and Larsson's relatives. Eva has been successful, however, in keeping some manuscripts of Larsson's unpublished works with herself.
