The Lost Man Booker Prize

The Man Booker prize started in 1968 and has increasingly gained prestige in the literary world since then. Many consider the prize to be of comparable prestige to the Nobel prize for Literature. It is awarded once a year to a book that is written in the English language, by a citizen of either the Commonwealth of Nations, Ireland, or Zimbabwe and is published the same year.

But at the onset, the award was given out to books retrospectively. This changed in 1970 when it was decided that books published in the same year would be nominated for the award. At the same time, the date on which the award was given moved from April to November. As a result of these changes all books published in 1970 missed the Booker that year.

This year, in fact on the 25th of March,2010, it has been decided to award the books published in 1970. The prize will be called the The Lost Man Booker Prize. 6 books have been shortlisted for the award:

  1. The Birds on the Trees by Nina Bawden (Virago)
  2. Troubles by J G Farrell (Phoenix House)
  3. The Bay of Noon by Shirley Hazzard (Virago)
  4. Fire From Heaven by Mary Renault (Arrow)
  5. The Driver's Seat by Muriel Spark (Penguin)
  6. The Vivisector by Patrick White (Vintage)
