So much has been published on writer-celebrity, J K Rowling already that it is difficult for me to sort out the most interesting, relevant bits for my dear Book Lovers Club Members. Here is a sincere attempt:

J K Rowling

J K RowlingJoanne Rowling was born in 31 July, 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England. She has been married twice and has 3 children-2 daughters and a son. She mainly writes children's fiction and is most famous for her Harry Potter series. Apart from this, she is also well known for her 'rags-to-riches' story where she went from living on state-sponsored welfare to becoming a millionaire within a span of 5 years.

At one point in time( after her separation from her first husband, jobless and with a dependent child) she considered herself "the biggest failure I knew". She delivered an interesting speech on failure in Harvard in 2008 from which I quote:

“Failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy to finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one area where I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter, and a big idea. And so rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

Rowling today is a multi-millionaire and has won several awards and honorary degrees. She donates actively to charity and is media shy. She is also pro-British and has ensured that the cast in the Harry Potter film series remains strictly British.

Book Review Circle gossip

Do you know the full name of J K Rowling? Unlikely. That is because the K stands for nothing. She is just Joanne Rowling. When her publisher expressed fear that young boys(her target audience) would not want to read books written by a woman, she used two initials to make her name sound more masculine. K simply represents her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling.
