Malcolm Gladwell introduces the topic by highlighting the survey taken on the rates of heart disease in different towns. To his research, he gathered the information that a community of Resoto, Italy did not have any records of heart disease until 65. The reason for this abundance health was as people (family) of three generations lived in the same house under one roof including great, great grandparents. He also illustrates with several anecdotes how people with total humble origin have achieved success. He elaborates that an entrepreneur not need have any capital at all to start a business. So, we can start small too. He elucidates with an example Bornicht and his wife who made 5 aprons in a day sacrificing their midnight sleep and then Bornicht took them to the streets to sell. Though they made little money, they later bought two sewing machines and then hired one more person and soon a day had come when he had a leading garment industry. So, the success has a lot to do with hard work, family culture and background which gave them the greatest opportunities. Malcolm further traces the success of a person to his bring up and family culture which he elaborates across with two scenarios of cultures: a culture of people living in a fertile land who co-operate, and a culture of people living in mountainous valley who take care of sheep who are more violent and show loyalty only to blood ties. The author also illustrates the ethnics of air crashed planes pilots and scientifically infers the reasons that could lead to air crashes. Mr. Gladwell further illustrates and compares the ethics and work habits of the successful Chinese farmer to Euoropean or US farmers and elaborates how the former have large production of rice compared to the latter merely due to their work ethics. Gladwell also points out the magic rules to achieve greatness with real life examples that are truly engaging.
